I’m passionate about data and data analysis, it’s something that comes naturally to me. I’ve been coaching and helping people understand Power BI for the past three years and don’t plan to stop anytime soon. I’ve built relationships with people in the DFW Data community I hope to strengthen through this effort.
We began work on a map for the city of Cleveland with the focus on students in the Cleveland Municipal School District and the neighborhoods they live in. The discoveries made during this effort reflected what we say in Dallas as the poorest areas of the city, majority black, and densely populated were highly correlated with low rates of broadband subscription. The error made by policy makers was not taking the level of detail into account when performing their analysis. Using American Community Survey data from Census Bureau and focusing at the tract level showed the true deficits in access to affordable internet. Rates that were at 40% for one level of detail rose to 70% when additional focus was placed at the sub-census-tract level (less than 0.9 square miles).
Digital Access Map
The Digital Access Map is a project designed to provide our community with insight into the neighborhoods with the greatest need for broadband. This project deals directly with the issues around Cleveland youth not having access to either Internet or devices or both To address this we set up a think tank of leader from diverse backgrounds to solve the problem of getting technology and devices into the hands of our youth.
Digital Access Data
To attack this issue means finding the areas most vulnerable to the digital divide and strategically implementing change on the ground. Without the targeted data and metrics collected by a team of talented researchers, we are on a rudderless ship steering into a minefield. To increase effectiveness of the current model, we plan to include demographic data at the census block group (the smallest geographic unit available) that factor into an index to determine severity across regions. This will give us the nationwide analysis needed to understand more fully the scope and depth of the digital divide specifically in access to affordable broadband.
